Honey Bowl – Sweet, Sweet Brunch in Hongdae

If you’re looking for some seriously tasty brunch in Seoul, this is it!

Set on a side street in between Hapjeong and Hongdae is a simply delicious brunch restaurant.

Honey Bowl

Honey Bowl has a second floor and also outdoor dining. Its decor is bright, clean and sunny – exactly what you need to wake you up!

But enough about that, the food!

Honey Bowl serves pancakes, French toast, and massive combination brunch plates.

The prices range from 6,000 won to 14,000 won. And let me tell you, the portions are huge.

The boyfriend ordered the Simple Plate for 10,000 won: three bacon strips, two pancakes, wedge potatoes, two eggs, and a salad.

I’m not a pancake person, but I had a bite of the pancakes, and it was perfect: fluffy, melt in your mouth buttery goodness.  I stole a few bites more when he wasn’t looking!

I ordered the Eggs Benedict for 13,500 won.  It came with two poached eggs topped lovingly on an English muffin, complimented with tomatoes, cheese, and  a generous heaping of strips of bacon.  It also came with a cherry tomato and mushroom salad drizzled with balsamic sauce.

The soft, poached eggs went well with the  crispness of the English muffin and the bacon just wanted to party.

We’ve come here several times to satisfy our brunch cravings!

You can get to Honey Bowl from either Hapjeong Station, Exit 6, or Sangsu Station, Exit 1.  Happy food travels! – Love from Jane

2014 Korean Hair Adventures: Getting a Perm in Seoul! + 15% Discount

The Backstory

Ever since I can remember, I’ve wanted curly hair.  In kindergarten, there was a teacher named Miss Blanca who had beautiful, short, curly hair.  I would sit in class and spend hours twirling my hair obsessively.  I would imagine, how does her hair get like that?

In high school, I went through a phase where I had my hair streaked bright red.  My mother said I looked like a parrot.  I like to think it was a compliment.  I’ve dyed it caramel blonde (bad idea), and light brown (not so bad idea).

On a rainy day in Seoul, I set out for a haircut, and ended up leaving with a perm in Seoul!

The Place

I went to Juno Hair Salon.  I’ve been to Juno Hair Salon in Hongdae two times before, and have been successful in getting a haircut in which no one can even tell you’ve gotten a haircut (which to me means it’s a success).  Juno Hair is popular with Seoulites and foreigners alike, so I didn’t doubt that they’d do a good job.

I walked up to the floor, pressed the button to open the door, took one step, and WHAM!! nearly tripped and fell over a step.  Dammit.  When I regained my composure, some friendly associates escorted me to the cushy chairs, where I told them I wanted a haircut and also wanted to ask for the prices for a perm.

Go You spoke some English and he was able to answer my questions about the perm.

The price would be 240,000 won ($240) and included a haircut, shampoo and treatment along with the perm.  If taken care of, the perm would last up to 6 months.  I could not wash my hair with shampoo for 48 hours.

Although I found the price to be more expensive than other places, I trusted that it would be great.  Juno Hair is a very popular hair salon and I decided if I would get a perm, I would pay more for the quality.

The specialists at Juno proceeded to offer me biscuits, pretzels, and lots of tea (Green tea or coffee? Yes please!).  When they asked if I had dinner and I replied no, they even made me some buttered toast.  (It was delicious!)

After lots of soft conditioning items in my hair and a head massage, they put some products in my hair and attached me to the futuristic memory machine, where I forget I spent a lot of money. They also give me more pretzels and coffee.  I am content.

Here are some pictures.

Greetings from the future.   They set my hair into this contraption and it rolled away. It was very comfortable.  I think my hair stylist said it was a setting perm.  The process took about 3 hours.

I like it! All in all, I was very satisfied with my experience and how my hair turned out.  I would definitely do it again.
